Glass workers in Leerdam: a fragile skill
Fantastic, poetic footage of glass workers in a factory in Leerdam. Glass-making skills in Europe were once widespread, but now are held for the future by just a few factories, organisations and independent artists. This glimpse into the past is made all the more magical for the silence; the lack of a soundtrack somehow condenses the activities into something very beautiful, not just functional. Great to see women and some of the cold-working and printing processes which are often left out in favour of the more balletic glass-blowing (perhaps not so great to see kids working too).
